Potato Masiyal/Mashed Potatoes Indian Style

Potato/Urulai Kizhangu Masial, this is one of my favorite dishes with potatoes, that goes well with almost anything. I usually make this as a side dish to go with rice and kuzhambus like the Kathirikkai Kuzhambu here, it's the perfect combination. It's once again an easy dish, no super skills required, if you leave out the time to boil or steam the potatoes, it hardly takes about a few minutes to put together this dish..

Need to Have

  • Potatoes - 3 medium
  • Onion - 1 medium chopped
  • Green Chilly - 1 chopped
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Urad Dal/Black Gram - 1 teaspoon
  • Curry Leaves - 10-15

Method

Pressure cook the potatoes, peel and mash them. Add the turmeric powder and salt and mix it well. Heat some oil, add the urad dal and mustard seeds.

Once it starts spluttering and the urad dal turns golden, add the curry leaves, chopped onions, green chilli and asafoetida, saute for about 2 or 3 minutes, till the onions turn pink. Reduce the heat, add the potatoes and mix it well and it's ready to be served.

Note
You can check for salt at the stage where you mix the mashed potatoes with turmeric powder and salt.
If doing for small kids, you can totally avoid the green chilly or just slit it and add and remove it before serving.
You can also add some grated coconut at the end, gives a nice flavor and taste to the curry.
